The art of recycling

Growing up my family recycled everything. Not much went to waste. Some would say our basement looked like a scene from hoarders, but I always loved looking through all the stuff my mom had saved and dreamed of what it could be if she let me alter it. But usually she had a plan for these stored treasures and was just waiting for the time to execute the project.  So I had to move on to the next potential restyle idea and solicit approval.
You see we didn't recycle because it was cool. My family recycled out of necessity. No fancy Tupperware for us we used rinsed out cottage cheese containers and plastic bread sacks to hold leftovers or lunch. Dad refinished grandpas old furniture if I needed a new dresser or chair. It was fun to learn how to make things new again.
Then the 90s happened and I left home for college and was tempted by the "buy new throw away old" craze. Everything had to be matchy matchy and reflect current style. Then 2000 hit and I bought everything I wanted to make my environment perfectly reflect my creative personality until my credit cards exploded. Not my finest financial moment. It just got worse...that's a story for another day.
Today I am inspired again with the abundance around me. I am trying to be more mindful that I have everything I need if I just look around my house. Pringles and coffee cans are covered in pretty paper to store my gems or glue for art making. Old pillows are recovered to make cute dog beds or decorator pillows for my girls. Tins are repainted to create little artworks for gifts. I've even made awesome journals out of cereal boxes and covered them in paint and recycled wrapping paper. My recycled inspiration muscle has been born again.
It's all about accepting things have multiple purposes and allowing the creativity to happen.
What have you recycled into art? I'd love to hear from you.
